CARDIN, MIKULSKI ANNOUNCE $450,000 FOR MONTGOMERY COUNTY AIRPARK

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Montgomery County Airpark $450,000 through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) to remove obstructions near the runway to increase flight safety.

"Montgomery Airpark is a critical hub for Montgomery County's economy and I am committed to ensuring it has the resources needed to meet safety standards," said Senator Cardin. "Continued federal investment will ensure that it meets the best aviation standards for safety and reliability while supporting our local community and businesses."

"I am committed to keeping our runways safe and Marylanders on the move," said Senator Mikulski, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation. "I will keep fighting in the U.S. Senate to ensure the safe operation of Maryland's airports and runways."

This grant will provide federal funding to acquire land for obstruction removal in the transitional zone and approach to Runway 14, enhancing safety at the airpark. AIP provides both formula and discretionary funding to airports. Revenues for the AIP come from airport user fees and fuel taxes. Last year, Congress provided $3.5 billion for AIP. This funding can be used for exterior capital improvements and repairs including: new runways, aprons, lighting, planning and land purchases.
