CARDIN, MIKULSKI ANNOUNCE $222K FOR US 113 IN WORCESTER COUNTY

WASHINGTON –
U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and
Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced that the Federal Highway Administration has awarded Worcester County $222,300 for US 113 Safety and Traffic Improvements. Senator Cardin, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, and Senator Mikulski, a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, fought to secure this funding in the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill. This funding will be used to update the existing two-lane road to a four-lane highway, improving safety and access due to high volume of seasonal traffic and commercial and residential development.

“When completed, the expansion of US 113 to a four-lane highway will help address safety concerns, relieve congestions on this heavily traveled roadway and support the community and local businesses,” said
Senator Cardin. “As a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, I am especially pleased that roadway improvements for US 113 include resurfacing of existing roadways and shoulders, reforestation, drainage upgrades, and better signage and pavement markings.”

“A safer America begins at home, that means investing in our infrastructure. Upgrades to U.S. 113 are about saving lives on the Eastern Shore,”
Senator Mikulski said.  “As Maryland's senior senator, you can count on me to keep fighting for federal funding that will create jobs in Maryland and keep travelers along its roadways safe.”

“US 113 is a major thoroughfare connecting beach communities along the Eastern Shore and is in desperate need of an upgrade to accommodate existing and future traffic,”
Congressman Frank Kratovil (MD-1) said. “I am pleased that the federal government will be investing in these improvements taking some of the burden away from the State and local governments.”

This funding from this grant will be used for work on Phase 3 of the five-phase project. Currently, construction is ongoing between Hayes Landing Road and Goody Hill Road and completion is expected in the fall of 2010.
Today’s announcement for Phase 3 funding will maintain access to residential and commercial properties from North of Massey Branch to Five Mile Branch Road.
Ultimately, US 113 will be four lanes with two lane in each direction.
