WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) issued the following statement in advance of Flag Day, June 14, 2014.

“In 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted a flag all Americans could salute and unite beneath. The Flag Act read, “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” With that simple statement, one of the most prolific visual manifestations of freedom and perseverance was etched into history.

“Maryland has a special place in the history of our nation and our flag. The Chesapeake Campaign of the War of 1812 was instrumental in maintaining our hard fought independence after the Revolutionary War. Our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, were all born out of our state. This year we continue to observe the bicentennial of the Chesapeake Campaign with the Star Spangled Banner 200 program. I encourage all Marylanders to use this time to reconnect with our rich, shared history.

“We should use this day to remember what our flag stands for. Flag Day is about honoring our nation’s history paying special tribute to all that our flag represents, including the principles of justice, equality and liberty.  Flag Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on these core beliefs and to celebrate the ideals that the symbol of our nation represents to all Americans and to people around the world.  

“Just like 200 years ago during the Chesapeake Campaign we must remember that the ideals for which we stand are defended by brave Americans in uniform. In the days since the Second Continental Congress adopted a flag to represent “a new constellation”, millions of Americans have carried the flag into battle. Our banner still waves and our values endure because of their sacrifices.  By flying the flag, we thank them for their service and reaffirm our commitment to keep America strong and free.”
