CARDIN CALLS ARREST OF SERBIAN WAR CRIMINAL AN IMPORTANT STEP FOR INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin  (D-MD), co-chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, issued the following statement on the arrest of Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general accused of masterminding the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995.  Mladic had been considered one of the world’s most wanted fugitives for more than 15 years.  Serbian President Boris Tadic has announced that Mladic will be turned over to the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

“I am enormously pleased to hear that Serbian authorities have arrested Ratko Mladic.   It has taken time and pressure to overcome the numerous hurdles that were placed in the way of his apprehension.  I take Serbian President Boris Tadic’s reminder that Goran Hadzic is still at-large and must be found as a clear expression of his commitment to put the Milosevic era completely behind Serbia, and he has my full support in that regard.  This is a good day for Serbia, Bosnia and all the countries of the region.”
