CARDIN APPLAUDS DECISION OF SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE TO CONTINUE FUNDING FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD

BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) today applauded the decision of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to reverse its decision to halt funding of Planned Parenthood.   The Foundation announced today that because of the uproar that their decision had caused, they will continue to fund Planned Parenthood.

Senator Cardin yesterday joined 25 other U.S. Senators in a letter to Nancy G. Brinker, CEO of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, protesting the cuts in funding for Planned Parenthood, which receives $650,000 a year for breast cancer screening and prevention from the Foundation.

“Women are the real winners today in the decision of the Susan G. Komen Foundation to continue funding for Planned Parenthood.  Each year, Planned Parenthood provides vital  health services to women, many of them poor and without other resources,” said Senator Cardin.  “The goal should always be to provide women with important services such as mammograms that can detect cancer and I am pleased that the Komen Foundation reversed its decision and will continue funding Planned Parenthood, one of the most trusted and important providers of health care services to women in our country.”
