CARDIN STATEMENT ON THE STATE OF THE UNION

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), released the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address. Senator Cardin is a member of the Senate Committees on Finance, Budget, Small Business & Entrepreneurship, Environment & Public Works, and Foreign Relations.  His guest for the State of the Union address was Maryland Senator Joanne Benson (Dist. 24-Prince George’s County).  He was proud that Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake also was in attendance. Senator Cardin sat next to Republican Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS).

“We must invest in America. It’s good for our economy and helps create jobs. I wholeheartedly agree with President Obama that we have to put more money into the hands of hard-working Americans, support American small businesses, and foster American innovation. We need to get more Americans back to work. This must be our focus.

“President Obama understands that gridlock does nothing to help American families and does not create jobs. I believe that we can – and must — work across party lines to accomplish our work on behalf of the American people. Only by working together can we make the investments we need to grow our economy and create more American jobs.

“The State of our Union is ‘Getting Better.’ But there still are millions of Americans who are searching for jobs, fearing if their small business can survive, or wondering if their retirement savings will last.  These Americans and their families continue to feel the weight of the worst recession in generations. Our economy must work for everyone, not just the wealthiest and most fortunate among us.”
