U.S. Senator Ben Cardin’s Statement on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

Ten years ago, the United States of America suffered an unprecedented tragedy that forever changed our nation.

On September 11th, we pause to remember the more than 3,000 people who perished in the attacks on our nation. We remember the occupants of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the crew and passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93.  We honor the selfless actions of our firefighters, police, paramedics and other emergency and medical personnel who responded to these acts of terrorism.

On this 10th Anniversary of 9/11, the state of Maryland will dedicate the 9/11 Memorial of Maryland in front of the World Trade Center in Baltimore.  The memorial will honor the extraordinary heroism, commitment and sacrifice of Maryland’s 9/11 victims, survivors, rescuers, first responders and their families.  It will pay special tribute to the 68 Marylanders who lost their lives that day and will provide a place to contemplate and to reflect upon the events of September 11, 2001.

We also should include in our thoughts and prayers the men and women in our Armed Forces who work every day to protect us from terrorists who want to destroy our way of life.  Our nation is truly fortunate for the first responders and soldiers who have dedicated their lives to keeping us secure, and we must support and thank them.

I hope you will join me in honoring our country and our people today, and every day, through service to our community and our nation.
