Kids' and Teachers' Resources

Several federal and Maryland state government websites provide a wide array of free educational resources for teachers and students, including lesson plans, engaging materials for classroom instruction and professional development opportunities. 

Resources for Classroom Instruction:

Library of Congress Teachers Page: Find standards-based tutorials, interactive student activities, webcasts and more than 85 lesson plans on topics ranging from history to literature to civics and government.  Also offers more than 19 million primary source materials, including films, documents, photographs and maps.    

National Archives Lesson Plans: Contains reproducible copies of primary documents from the holdings of the National Archives of the United States, teaching activities correlated to the National History Standards and National Standards for Civics and Government, and cross-curricular connections.

Federal Resources for Educational Excellence: The most popular K-12 websites maintained by the U.S. Department of Education, FREE makes it easier to find teaching and learning resources from the federal government.  More than 1,500 federally supported teaching and learning resources are included from dozens of federal agencies.

America’s Library: Engage younger students in a fun and interactive way using this page, which teaches America’s history through games, puzzles, and other activities.

Maryland Dept. of Education Toolkit: This page offers Maryland educators resources to enhance student learning in the classroom, as well as improve student success on all Maryland assessments.          

Professional Development

LOC Professional Development: This page highlights training opportunities for teachers at the Library of Congress in D.C., in communities, and online.

U.S. Dept. of Education Seminars: These seminars are designed to share information about education policy that will help teachers to be engaged and participate in policy discussions at the federal, state and district level.
