CARDIN VOTES FOR CHANGE IN IRAQ
"Supporting our Troops Means Developing a Real Plan for Success and Giving Them the Care They Deserve When They Return Home."

WASHINGTON –
Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, today voted for a new direction in Iraq. The Senator voted in favor of an emergency supplemental bill [S. 1591] that requires President Bush to start reducing our troop levels, while also making sure that our troops have the equipment they need to stay safe while still at war. The Senate passed the bill today by a vote of 51-47.

“The American people want a new direction in Iraq, and since President Bush refuses to change course, Congress is taking action,” said Sen. Cardin. “The message we are sending President Bush is loud and clear: start reducing our troop levels and engaging the international community to help rebuild Iraq. Supporting our troops means implementing a plan for success in Iraq and giving them the care they deserve when they return home. We will always give our troops the equipment they need to remain safe while at war, but we need to start bringing them home safely too. We must not give President Bush a blank check to keep our troops in Iraq indefinitely.”

As a Member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Cardin voted against the war in Iraq. He has remained a consistent critic of the President's management of the war and has called for the drawdown of American troops and engagement of the international community to help rebuild Iraq.
