Cardin Statement on the Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) released the following statement on the 42nd anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision of Roe v. Wade.

“Empowering women is one of the most important things we can do for the future of our country. Core to this is the constitutional right women have to make their own choices about their own health and well-being. I have always supported the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, which codified this essential right to privacy. We must allow women the unfettered ability to exercise their rights. An ever-increasing majority of Americans believe that women should have access to family planning and abortion services, when they deem necessary.”

Senator Cardin has consistently defended Roe v. Wade from partisan attacks. He supports provisions in the Affordable Care Act that guarantee the majority of women can access to comprehensive preventive health care and screenings, and coverage for contraception and contraceptive counseling.  In the 114th Congress, Senator Cardin is an original cosponsor of a resolution introduced by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) that would affirm the constitutionality of Roe v. Wade. He also has cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2015, which explicitly prohibits laws and regulations that single out the provision of abortion services for restrictions that are more burdensome than those imposed on medically comparable procedures, do not significantly advance women’s health or the safety of abortion services, and make abortion services more difficult to access.
