WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) today announced that the Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport has received a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to rehabilitate and reconstruct one of its major taxiways.    In addition to reconstructing the taxiway, the project will provide expanded space for the future growth of commercial cargo space at the airport.

“The Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport is an important hub for commercial and passenger travel and it is absolutely essential that it meet modern standards of safety,” said Senator Cardin.  “This is a significant grant that will create construction jobs and allow for expanded access for businesses in the future.”

“With the many exciting improvements underway at our airport both in service and facilities, this grant is a welcome bonus and will allow us to make essential upgrades to the taxi area, assuring the safety of the aircraft and the passengers and crew that fly them.  We’re very grateful to Senator Cardin for his efforts in securing this important federal funding,” said Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt.

The $1.2 million grant will be used to reconstruct sections of Taxiway E, which has some pavement that dates back to World War II.   The project is a multi-year construction project that is estimated will take three to four years to complete.  It is expected that the overall project will provide 50 jobs for area residents during each phase of the construction.
