The economic and environmental health of Maryland and our nation is interconnected with the growth of our transportation systems. Federal investment in public transportation like MARC, Metro, and Amtrak should be a national priority. Our nation receives extraordinary public benefit from mass transit systems. |
They take thousands of cars off our congested highways. They take tons of pollutants out of the air we breathe. They move people efficiently into and out of our most important commercial centers.
I also will continue to back funding for our most important transportation priorities, including adequate funding for our existing transit system as well as expanding it to include the new Red Line in Baltimore, the Purple Line in Prince George's and Montgomery counties, and the Corridor Cities Transitway along the I-270 corridor.
I also have...
- Led the fight in Congress to secure $1.5 billion over the next ten years for the Washington Metro System, "America's Subway."
- Fought for the development of greenways across our state as alternative routes for local transportation and recreation;
- Helped boost funding for road projects around our military installations that are expanding to bring more than 60,000 new jobs to Maryland. We need to BRAC-ready our transportation system at Bethesda Naval Medical Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Ft. Meade, Ft. Detrick, l and Andrews Air Force Base
- Led effort to ensure that passenger air service can resume at Hagerstown Airport through the Essential Air Service program, adding stability to local jobs and the local economy until Congress passes the five-year extension of the FAA Reauthorization;
- Supported critical transportation funding for rural Maryland, including dualization of Route 113 on the Eastern Shore and completing the North-South Corridor plan along Routes 219 and 220 in Western Maryland.
