Seniors are often some of our most vulnerable citizens. As their health care and retirement needs change, it is important that we help ensure they have the services that they need. Throughout my congressional career, I have championed the need for additional resources and services so that seniors can live independently, in their communities, for as long as possible. Keeping seniors as independent as possible improves quality of life and it also makes economic sense. |
We also need to do all we can to help our seniors remain financially secure in their retirement. During these difficult economic times, I co-sponsored legislation to allow a one-year moratorium on the required minimum distribution (RMD) from IRAs or 401 (k) plans. I am pleased that this bill has been enacted into law.
I also have...
- A "senior" payment of $250 for individuals and $500 for couples receiving Social Security benefits in the economic recovery package;
- A 6.2 percent increase in Medicaid funding from Oct. 1, 2008 through Dec. 31, 2010;
- More than $900 million for the senior meals programs;
- Legislation to ensure that physical, speech and occupational therapies are fully covered by Medicare;
- An increase in individual Medicare premium support for low-income seniors; and,
- Legislation to expand community health centers, which is where many seniors in rural areas obtain health care services.
